BREAST AUGMENTATION
Breast augmentation is an operational intervention
for enlarging the breast volume. Beast augmentation
operation can be applied to people who complain
about the small size of their breasts due to
developmental reasons, weight loss or post natal
changes and who have imbalance in the size of the
two beasts.
It is decided whether you are an appropriate patient
for this operation is decided after interview,
detailed physical examination and analysis. Breast
augmentation is simply applied with the silicon
implants (prothesis) located under breasts. Today,
mostly used implants are silicon gel or serum filled
in a silicon envelope (case). Implants can be in
different volumes, smooth or rippled surfaced
(textured) and in round or anatomic (drop) shapes.
Silicon implants have not been detected until today
to cause any carcinogen, immunologic or rheumatic
diseases. They are used safely today. They are
manufactured in USA, European Union countries and
Japan. Turkey uses imported implants from these
countries.
Breast implants can be located under the breast
tissue or under the muscle (pectoral) muscle under
the breast. They do not cause any harm to nursing as
they do not damage the breast tissue. The most
frequent problem with breast implants is the capsule
formation around the implant. It is natural to form
a membrane (capsule) made of connective tissue
around the implant as it is a foreign object. This
capsule does not constitute a problem in general.
But, it rarely can thicken and cause hardness. Then,
it may require removal or cutting with operation.
With the textured implants used today and suggested
massages after operation, capsule formation is
minimized.
Silicon implants do not hinder the radiological
examination (mammography) of the breast. Women can
continue their routine breast controls and take
mammography with their implants.
Breast augmentation operation is generally conducted
under general anesthesia. It is possible to prefer
local anesthesia. A special solution
(serum-adrenaline) is injected in the breast during
operation to decrease bleeding and the bleeding
occurs at a very low level.
Implants are generally located by entering with a 4
cm incision on the under breast line. This operation
scar can only be seen when the breast is lifted.
Implants can be located from the nipple (areola) or
armpit (axilla) when preferred.
Patient can be discharged the next day and can go
Geri to work after 3-4 days. Stitches are removed
after about 10-12 days. Required support can be
provided by wearing a special bra after operation.
Extreme sport activities are allowed after 6-8
weeks.
There are certain risks in this operation as in all
surgical interventions. Problems possibly to occur
in the short term can be summarized as bleeding,
infection and opening of the scar. Capsule formation
can occur around the implant in the long term. This
reaction is a normal answer of the body to a foreign
object. Depending on the prothesis type used
recently, capsule reaction rate has decreased down
to 5%.
